Kanyakumari District is placed at the South tip of India which is one of the important tourist spots in India. Asaripallam is another important place in Kanyakumari District, as it is one of the earliest TB Hospital established in South India. TB hospital was started in the year 1937 prior to independence by the Trivancore Cochin Government. TB hospital extended with an area of 100.5 acres.
To meet the growing demands of people and public, the Tamilnadu Government decided to start a new Medical College at Kanyakumari District. The Govt. T.B. Hospital campus at Asaripallam, Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District was selected as the site for the proposed Government Medical College. In G.O. M.s. No. 82/H &F.W. Dept., dated 11.03.2001 the Government accorded sanction for the establishment of the new Government Medical College at Kanyakumari District during the year 2001 - 2002 with an annual intake of 100 students in M.B.B.S. Course. The foundation stone also was laid for the same on 12.03.2001 by the Hon'ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare. Accordingly the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi issued permission to start a Medical College at Asaripallam in Kanyakumari District vide No.U. 12012/101/03-ME (P- II) dated 28.07.2004 and the college is new functioning with effect from 16.08.2004 onwards with an annual intake of 100 students.
